Apple crisp is on the top of the list when it comes to easy desserts. In this recipe for dairy free apple crisp, I use blended oats to make the crumble topping and it has a lovely texture and taste. It maintains the flavor of oats while having a more flour like texture than that of classic rolled oats. I like to top it with dairy free ice cream or some coconut whip cream for a fancy dessert. A neat quality this recipe contains, is that you can use gluten free oats to suit the gluten free lifestyle.

Putting it All together
The Chopped apples
The first thing I like to do is prepare the apples. I chop the apples into fairly small pieces. This recipe takes about 2 medium sized apples. You can use large apples but beware that the pan will be close to the top when you are done.
Mix the sugar, cinnamon, flour and apples together and set them aside. It allows them a few minutes to blend before baking.
This recipe calls for blended rolled oats. It works well with regular oats as well. I find that the topping comes together and forms a nice crumble topping when you blend the oats first. Using oats instead of flour gives the crisp a slightly different flavor, so if you like oats than this is the recipe for you!
Mix together the brown blended oatmeal, brown sugar, salt, and nutmeg. If you have never added nutmeg to your crumble topping then prepare for treat! It gives the topping slight flavor and makes it distinct from a traditional apple crisp recipe.
Crumble topping with coconut oil
Melt your coconut oil or plant butter and add it into your dry ingredients. For plant butter, Country Crock is a good option. The coconut oil gives the crumble a slightly sweeter taste than using plant butter or regular butter. I love it but my husband prefers the flavor of regular butter. Try it out and see what you prefer. They are all great options for a dairy free apple crisp.
If you are lactose intolerant or dairy sensitive it is possible that your stomach could handle regular butter. Butter contains less of the proteins that cause intolerance and sensitivity. The it is made removes a lot of the lactose. I know some people with dairy sensitivities or intolerances can handle butter in baked goods without any problems. Only you know what works for your body. If you are unsure make sure to go dairy free or consult a health expert. I know for myself my body can handle some butter without any reaction. Milk or cream however cause my stomach to be upset.

Spread the apples evenly across the bottom of an 8×8 cake pan. I like using a clear glass pan. This allows me to see when the apples start to bubble during the baking process.
Spread the crumb topping evenly across the top of the apples. Make sure to leave it loose and don’t pack down. If you want to make it more even just gently move it with your hand or shake the pan. It is now ready to bake!
